Every year, International Self-Care Day reminds us of something many of us forget: caring for yourself is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. In the hustle of daily life, we pour our energy into work, relationships, and responsibilities, often leaving our own well-being last on the list. But just like we’re told to secure our own oxygen mask before helping others, self-care is essential for living well and showing up for those we love.

What Self-Care Really Is (and What It’s Not)

Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and spa days—although those can be nice! True self-care is intentional. It’s about checking in with yourself, understanding your needs, and taking small, consistent actions to support your mental, emotional, and physical health.

Self-care is:
✅ Getting enough sleep

✅ Saying "no" when your plate is full
✅ Eating nourishing foods and moving your body
✅ Taking time for joy, laughter, and connection

Why Therapists (and Caregivers) Need It Too

For therapists and other helpers, self-care is crucial. Compassion fatigue and burnout are real risks in our field. We can’t hold space for others if we are running on empty ourselves. Taking time to rest, process our own emotions, and engage in activities that bring us peace isn’t just helpful—it’s ethical.

A Simple Challenge for International Self-Care Day

Self-care doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Ask yourself today:

  • What is one thing my mind needs? (Maybe quiet time, journaling, or therapy.)

  • What is one thing my body needs? (Movement, stretching, rest, or hydration.)

  • What is one thing my soul needs? (Connection, laughter, or simply a deep breath of fresh air.)

Then, commit to doing just one of those things—today, and every day if you can.

Because when you care for yourself, you’re not just surviving… you’re thriving. And that’s something worth celebrating every day—not just on International Self-Care Day.
